The weather, however, has so far been cold and blustery. ![]() I’m at the beach with my ‘holy’ family, all three children and their spouses. It’s been a good activity for me – maybe something you might want to give a try.I write this on the morning of the Feast of the Holy Family. It helps me see progress and growth, albeit painfully slow at times. At the end of the year and the beginning of the next, I do more of a formal review of the previous year and add or change as I draw upon a year’s experiences to better understand my role in God’s plan. For a whole year, I see them each time I visit my journal. On the front page I list similar mission oriented statements and goals. Draft a few statements that begin to define God’s plan for you, such as: “Using my gift of encouragement, I want to create a positive work environment where I and my colleagues can grow and prosper.”Įach year, I begin a new journal. Look for ways to weave your gifts and dreams into your roles. Don’t skip over areas because of personal guilt or neglect – simply give those regrets to God and ask for grace to overcome.Ĭreate some mission statements. Prioritize your list.Highlight the more important, but don’t discard the rest. Ask yourself, “What makes me unique? What do I enjoy doing? What am I good at? Ask yourself, “Who am I to others?” and where you invest most of your time and energy : mother, volunteer, worker, friend… Ask for clarity upon which parts of your life God would like you to focus. It is certainly a timely activity as we get ready to celebrate the birth of the Savior and a New Year. He suggested that we reflect upon our own personal mission in the eyes of God. Our pastor Father Jim talked about John the Baptist’s mission a couple of weeks ago in his homily. How does this impact what I thought was my purpose and mission as a director of a retreat center, a husband and father, and a minister? The changes in behavior that I thought were temporary nine month’s ago now appear to be permanent: fewer people going to church or the gym, more restrictions visiting hospitals and prisons, less face to face networking and more Zoom… just to name a few. With all of the changes that have resulted from the pandemic, it’s a question I need to revisit. What is my mission? A year ago, I had some certainty and confidence in how to answer that question. To give his people knowledge of salvationĮven before his birth, John sensed his mission as he ‘leapt in the womb’ of Elizabeth when Mary with the newly conceived child came near. ![]() ![]() You, my child, will be called prophet of the Most High,įor you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, Shortly after his birth, his father Zechariah sings what is commonly known as the Canticle of Zechariah, essentially spelling how: The scripture today turns to the birth of John the Baptist, who had a very clear mission in the plan of salvation: point out the messiah. ![]()

![]() It’s text expansion at its most rudimentary, but if you’re solely interested in saving time while typing, it’ll do the trick.Glad you find my experiment helpful. Inside you’ll be able to create basic expandable snippets. To find it, head over to the Keyboard palette and click on the Text tab. It’s not as powerful as a standalone app, but Apple has actually baked text expanding abilities into OS X since Mountain Lion. If you don’t want to pay anything to speed up your typing, there’s a way to do it right inside System Preferences. By piggybacking actions you’ll be able to expand your text in pretty much any way you can imagine whether you’re automating words, sentences or entire pages of type. Text tokens make macros infinitely more powerful by adding fields for things like calculations, dates, IP addresses and mouse location, and you can also program how your macro works within specific apps, or set snippets to expire after a set period of time. For example, when setting a snippet to be pasted rather than typed, you can tell Keyboard Maestro to return the clipboard to its prior contents, so whatever you had manually copied isn’t wiped out. From the abbreviations to the actions, everything is customizable down to the character. You can use Keyboard Maestro to make a basic macro that turns a string of letters into a line of text, but expert expanders will want to dive into the array of options available. But even if you just use it for its text expanding abilities, longtime TextExpander users will appreciate its versatility. Keyboard Maestro ($36) won’t just fill all of your text expanding needs, it’ll turn your keyboard into a veritable launchpad that will speed up everything you do on your Mac. Additionally, Ettore offers a TypeIt4Me keyboard for iOS, matching TextExpander’s cross-platform support. TypeIt4Me’s unique menu gives you access to all of your clippings, letting you insert them with a click rather than a shortcut. ![]() Snippets are given abbreviations for easy expanding, but you don’t actually need to remember them. But the app doesn’t bog you down with complicated menus. ![]() Compared to TextExpander, TypeIt4Me keeps it super simple, with a clear input window that mimics the ease of an OS X Settings pane.Īll of the usual options are here: rich text, picture, date, time, autocorrection, etc. TypeIt4Me is just as easy to use as it was on the day it was launched, with a menu bar- or Dock-based system of snippets (or clippings, as they’re called within the app) that can quickly be added to your document. While its interface may have changed, its core concept hasn’t. TypeIt4Me ($20) has been storing snippets and expanding text since the days of System 6, and it’s every bit as useful today as it was back then. If you’re looking for the original text expander, you might be surprised to learn it actually isn’t TextExpander. An expansion can be as simple as setting “tn” to expand to Typinator, but it can go a whole lot deeper than that, with case specification, cursor positioning and a whole word option that only expands phrases when the next typed character is neither a letter nor a digit, protecting against accidental inserts. But just because it doesn’t reside in the Dock doesn’t mean it isn’t as full-featured as TextExpander. Unlike most of its peers, Typinator is strictly a menu bar app. With easy drag-and-drop organization and a powerful set of expanding options, Typinator won’t just replace your reliance on TextExpander, it’ll make the transition effortless. Simplicity and speed are the main features of any text expanding app, and You can also create fill-in-the-blank templates that can make the most tedious of forms a breeze, and if you have more than one Mac, Dropbox and Google Drive integration will keep your snippets synced across all of them. The interface is hyper-focused on organization, neatly arranging your snippets by groups for easy editing. Like TextExpander, aText’s greatest strength is the time it saves with the automation of monotony. ![]() Dates, images, and formatting can also be added to snippets, and handy auto-correction tools can help with capitalization and misspellings. Simple, clearly labeled fields will get your workflow up and running in seconds, storing chunks of text that will expand whenever and wherever their accompanying abbreviations are typed. Setting up snippets is as quick as using them, and aText gets you started with a few common examples. ![]() ![]() ![]() You’ll have to factor in the cost of the materials and the labor it will take to build them, but you can also reuse this on other projects as well. Sample Problemįind the sum of the infinite geometric series given by. That means the series diverges and its sum is infinitely large. In fact, we can tell if an infinite geometric series converges based simply on the value of r. ![]() While the ideas of convergence and divergence are a little more involved than this, for now, this working knowledge will do. This is only the 21st term of this series, but it's very small. This is especially true when we add in terms like. However, each time we add in another term, the sum is not going to get that much bigger. On the other hand, the series with the terms has a sum that also increases with each additional term. This series is divergent, not convergent. We can see that each time we add in another number, the sum is going to get larger and larger and larger and larger and larger and larger…you get the idea. does not converge because every time we put another number into our sum, the sum gets a lot bigger. The series with the terms 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. A convergent series is one whose partial sums get closer to a certain value as the number of terms increases. Unfortunately, and this is a big "unfortunately," this formula will only work when we have what's known as a convergent geometric series. All we need is the first term and the common ratio and boom-we have the sum. This formula really couldn't be much simpler. The first is the formula for the sum of an infinite geometric series. We'll do both cool your jets.īefore we jump into sample problems, we'll need two formulas to find these sums. Not only can we find partial sums like we did with arithmetic sequences, we can find the overall sum as well. In this series, our numbers will start when n = 1 and go all the way to infinity. We use the same sigma notation we used with arithmetic series, so we have a general form that looks like this: Instead of just listing all the terms with commas in between, we take the sum of everything. A geometric series is just the added-together version of a geometric sequence. For the geometric series, one convenient measure of the convergence rate is how much the previous series remainder decreases due to the last term of the partial series. It's almost the last section, Shmoopers. (BOTTOM) Gaps filled by broadening and decreasing the heights of the separated trapezoids.Īfter knowing that a series converges, there are some applications in which it is also important to know how quickly the series converges. (MIDDLE) Gaps caused by addition of adjacent areas. (TOP) Alternating positive and negative areas. Rate of convergence Converging alternating geometric series with common ratio r = -1/2 and coefficient a = 1. In the limit, as the number of trapezoids approaches infinity, the white triangle remainder vanishes as it is filled by trapezoids and therefore s n converges to s, provided | r|1, the trapezoid areas representing the terms of the series instead get progressively wider and taller and farther from the origin, not converging to the origin and not converging as a series. The trapezoid areas (i.e., the values of the terms) get progressively thinner and shorter and closer to the origin. Each additional term in the partial series reduces the area of that white triangle remainder by the area of the trapezoid representing the added term. The area of the white triangle is the series remainder = s − s n = ar n+1 / (1 − r). For example, the series 1 2 + 1 4 + 1 8 + 1 16 + ⋯ Īlternatively, a geometric interpretation of the convergence is shown in the adjacent diagram. In mathematics, a geometric series is the sum of an infinite number of terms that have a constant ratio between successive terms. The total purple area is S = a / (1 - r) = (4/9) / (1 - (1/9)) = 1/2, which can be confirmed by observing that the unit square is partitioned into an infinite number of L-shaped areas each with four purple squares and four yellow squares, which is half purple. Another geometric series (coefficient a = 4/9 and common ratio r = 1/9) shown as areas of purple squares. The sum of the areas of the purple squares is one third of the area of the large square. Each of the purple squares has 1/4 of the area of the next larger square (1/2× 1/2 = 1/4, 1/4×1/4 = 1/16, etc.).
